Family Vacations: Wrightsville Beach | HowStuffWorks

Wrightsville Beach is known as the premier family beach town on the popular Cape Fear coastline of North Carolina. Located about 15 minutes from historic and activity-filled Wilmington, this peaceful seaside community has a small-island feel and miles of pure white sand. Accommodations are in cottages, condominiums, a couple of resort hotels, or simple and comfortable motels.

At Johnnie Mercer's Pier, drop a fishing line for sea trout and flounder. Crabbing on the beach is also a popular pastime. Many families enjoy swimming at the beaches between this pier and Crystal Pier, which are patrolled by lifeguards all summer long.

The Wrightsville area is considered one of the best surfing spots on the east coast, and kids of all ages can take lessons at several surf camps. Boogie boarding and windsurfing are popular, too. Paddlers can take a marked 14-mile kayak and canoe trail that winds throughout the island's marshes. Most of the public beaches have beach volleyball courts, and Wrightsville Beach Park has a children's playground.
